Israel Week at Texas Hillel Written on April 28, 2009 from the desk of Rabbi David Komerofsky

To  be Jewish is to live simultaneously in the past, present and future.  We are an ancient people whose history has been intertwined with the story of all humanity for four millennia yet our contemporary existence is as dynamic as it has been at any time in the past.  Within the past century the Jewish people have gone from exile to return, from destruction to consecration and from homelessness to hopefulness.

At the heart of the Jewish story today is the State of Israel.  Her history is a microcosm of what it means to be Jewish, blending the sacred and the ordinary and living a modern life amidst old traditions.  Life in the State of Israel, especially this week, teaches us what it means to experience the pain of loss and exalt in the triumph of justice.
